The objective of the collection is to share the information available on the bryozoans found in the Catalan-Balearic Sea (NW Mediterranean). Most identifications of Mediterranean bryozoans come from ancient references. New technological advances in genetics and electron microscopy (SEM) reveal new species hiding within old ones, and museum collections do not always facilitate the resolution of these questions. In an age of technological platforms, probably the most useful contribution to clarify the taxonomic status of Mediterranean bryozoans would be to provide accurate SEM images of recent, well-referenced and documented material. With this purpose, the project of the reference collection of bryozoans of the Western Mediterranean was born.
