The Red Panda is a carnivore that feeds mainly on bamboo, berries, fruit, roots and fungi, although it will sometimes eat small birds and their eggs, insects and small rodents. It has a robust cranium whose zygomatic arch, sagittal crest and postorbital process are poorly developed. Its mandible is robust but relatively short; its mandibular symphysis is flexible, which allows it to move its jaw to ingest plant matter. Its dentition is adapted to its diet and is different from that of other carnivores, but maintains the upper P3 and lower M1 carnassial teeth, with a chisel-shaped secodont dentition. Its incisors are elongated, and the upper and lower P3 premolars are robust and powerful. Its molars are long with five cusps and enable it to cut and grind plant matter. It has 40 teeth and a dentition with the following dental formula: I 3/3 C 1/1 P 4/4, M 2/2.
