The Mandrill is an omnivore whose highly varied diet includes fruit, seeds, fungi and roots, as well as insects and small vertebrates including reptiles and amphibians. Its cranium is large, with a very rounded posterior section, and has elongate facial bones that produce a notable prognathism. Its orbits are large and the superciliary arches located above the eyes ? where the temporal muscles used for mastication and grinding plant matter are attached ? are well developed. Its dentition is bunodont, with low rounded cusps on its molars. It also has long canine teeth, above all in males, which make the species significantly sexually dimorphic. It has 32 teeth with the following dental formula: I 2/2, C 1/1, P 2/2, M 3/3.
