The Hawfinch's robust rounded skull is large for a finch and provides stability for the powerful muscles it uses to feed. Its bill is broad, strong and conical in shape, and is adapted to many types of food, but chiefly to opening tough seeds such as cherry stones and the fruit of nettle trees. It will also feed on shoots and large fruits such as rose hips and the fruit of the yew tree.
