The Lowland or Spotted Paca is an American rodent that feeds on fruit, leaves, shoots, flowers, fungi and even some insects. Its cranium is wide due to the breadth of its zygomatic process, which is coupled to the maxillary bones to form a type of chamber. This is due to the insertion of the masticatory muscles, which permit it to grind and gnaw its food; it uses its mandible and teeth to break the hard shells of certain fruits. Its suborbital process is evident, and its nasal bone is sturdy and long. Its teeth are hypsodont, with high crowns, and lophodont, with cusps on its molars that enable it to break down plant matter. It has 30 teeth and the following dental formula: I 1/1, C 0/0, P 1/1, M 3/3.
