The Cougar, Puma or Mountain Lion feeds on small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, as well as larger prey including foxes and birds. Like other felines, it has a rounded skull, vertical face and short muzzle. The front of the skull has a sagittal crest and paraoccipital processes (next to the tympanic cavity) to which the mastication (masseter) muscles are attached. The orbits are placed on the front of the skull and, as in other predator species, provide the cougar with excellent forward vision. It has secodont teeth (i.e. specialised in tearing and quartering its prey) that are typical of carnivores, with carnassial teeth at P3 (third upper premolar) and M1 (first lower molar). It has long sharp canine teeth that are used when hunting prey and its 30 teeth are arranged according to the following dental formula: I 3/3 C 1/1 P 3/2 M 1/1, that is, three incisors and a canine tooth above and below, three premolars above and two below, and a molar above and below.
