The Northern Gannet is found in the northern Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It is well adapted to its diet, with a long, sturdy pointed bill whose tip is curved slightly downwards to enable it to grasp its slippery prey in flight. Its long robust sternum protects it from the impact of the water when it dives. It hunts by diving steeply down on the fish it detects in flight from a number of metres above the water's surface. Its main prey includes herrings, mackerel, sardines and cod.
