The Western Capercaillie eats plant matter including leaves, twigs, seeds, fruit, moss and berries but in spring and summer also includes in its diet invertebrates such as spiders, ants and beetles. In winter it is strictly vegetarian and when the snow prevents it from feeding on the ground it spends its time in trees feeding on pine needles. Its bill is more robust in males as they need to compete for females and feed more efficiently on pine needles in winter.
