A good way of estimating the state of an ecosystem is to find out the population density of certain organisms there, considered as indicators of the overall biological system. The use of indicators reduces costs in the application of environmental management programmes.

Biodiversity indicators are called bioindicators. When the populations of a species are sensitive to the modifications presented by an environment, this species is accredited as an indicator of environmental quality or biomarker.
